Legislative Chaos In The UK Threatens The Local Hemp Industry

Amid the legislative chaos, the United Kingdom’s Home Office continues to persecute farmers growing hemp for CBD, a policy posing a threat to the whole industrial hemp sector.

Last month, the Oxfordshire-based hemp co-op Hempen was forced to destroy £200,000 worth of  crops, after failing to receive a growing license. Although growing hemp for seed and stalk is perfectly legal and it was precisely what Hempen was planning to do this season, the government officials still told co-op’s founder Patrick Gillet to destroy the entire crop.

“Instead of capitalizing on the booming CBD industry, the Home Office’s bureaucracy is leading British farmers to destroy their own crops, and millions of pounds’ worth of CBD flowers are being left to rot in the fields,” said Gillett, cited by the HempToday site.

Incidents like this clearly show how important it is for the hemp industry to unite and demand precise legal regulations & guidelines. Hempen’s case also highlights the importance of moving the task of regulating the hemp industry from fiscal authorities to agriculture, hemp or food departments.

“The government should move the responsibility of regulating farmers over to DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs)” and out of the Home Office, Gillett noted.
